The nuthatch is a small woodpecker like bird with a long straight bill and is strikingly coloured with slate blue
above and chestnut underparts. About the size of a great tit, it can be very vocal in woodlands, with the distinctive
sound carrying far. There are limited sightings of nuthatch in Ayrshire and it is hoped that it will ultimately see a
breeding pair established in the vicinity
of Sorn Castle or Sornbank Plantation.

April 09 update. Nuthatch still heard around Sorn Castle and also in the grounds of Dumfries House, Auchinleck.
Still present Summer 2011 around Sorn Castle.
