Long Eared Owl (Asio otus

Status: Resident all year round
Scots Names:
Cat Owl, Hornie Hoolet
Size: 36cm
Habitat: Coniferous and mixed woodland
Food: Small mammals and some small birds
UK population: ~3600 pairs in Summer
Breeding: Often in top of hollow tree stump or in corner of an outbuilding or barn.
Up to 4 eggs, incubation up to 28 days

Call Note: Low resonant 'hoop', sounds like blowing into a bottle. Squeaky whistling calls of young can be heard
from a distance as they fledge around the edge of the woodland.
