Status: Very small number resident all year round and breeding (hundreds) but numbers considerably higher in Winter            
Scots Names:
Popping Wigeon, Rattlewings, Diver, Brown-headed Duck
Size: 46cm
Habitat: Mainly marshes, rivers, lakes and lochs, often coastal
UK Population: Up to 25,000 birds can overwinter
Breeding: 8-11 eggs, up to 30 days incubation
Food: Insects, molluscs, fish and crustaceans, usually by diving
Call Note: Squeaks and croaks, almost like a dog's toy being shaken rapidly
Status: AMBER
