Sycamore     NON-NATIVE

(Acer pseudoplatanus)

The paired, winged fruit (keys) are green tinged with red and ripen to brown. Smooth grey-brown bark when young,
becoming scaly and flaky with maturity. Flowers hang in long, spiky clusters.

Height up to 35m, with magnificent domed canopy. New buds resemble alien heads and seeds are carried by the distinctive
'helicopter' dispersal.

Uses of sycamore

Furniture, butchers' blocks, veneer, boxes, crates, kitchen tables, interior mouldings and finishings, wooden bowls & plates.

It is a soft wood, that is carved quite easily.
