Norway Spruce (Picea abies) NON-NATIVE
This well known evergreen is better
known as the Christmas Tree. It was introduced from mainland Europe into Britain.
100 to 200 ft tall (30-60 metres
in its native habitat) with 4 angled, flattened, stiff needles, which are dark
green,
four sided and pointed are 0.5 to 1 inch long (1.2-2.5cm)
Norway Spruce has large cones,
4 to 7 inches long (10-18cm) and irregularly toothed, stiff scales.
They are stalkless and are shed intact. Cones are produced when they reach 30
to 40 years of age and are one of the favoured
food sources for the native red squirrel.
USES:
Similar to sitka spruce - used in the construction industry, packaging, pallets
and paper making (pulp).
