How the wood got its birdsong
All the birds in all
the woods
Had different lovely calls
They sang throughout the day and night
Through wind and rain and storm
The wise old owl had a lovely call
For he's king of all the trees
But other birds all flocked together
And begun to shake the leaves
They made a terrible
noise
And drowned out the owl's hoot
The other birds were jealous
From wren to finch to coot
All the birds were singing
Together in one tree
The owl was heard to shout aloud
Enough just let me be
I have a little plan
That will make us all feel good
A plan to bring some lovely song
In to our lovely wood
So if you're all perched happily
I will tell you all my plan
And when I call your name out
Make as much noise as you can
Over by the hedgerow
the robin will sing aloud
And in the trees above the hedge blue tit will sing out proud
The hazel tree beside the pond is where blackbird will sing
And from the oak, the song thrush sings a lovely sound it brings
Underneath the hedge is the wren & dunnock's place
The warblers can delight in the willow's warm embrace
The jay's can have the edges and warn us with their call
The finches have the beech tree, the orchard & the wall
The other birds were
happy
Now they all knew their place
Each one would sing out loud & clear
Within its own small space
And when the day was over
With the songbirds snug & calm
The wise old owl with its soothing hoot
Would keep them safe from harm
