Big Wood

Big Wood lies approximately midway between Newmilns & Galston, immediately North of the A71 and immediately East of Loudoun Gowf Club.

Parking: Parking for several cars in the Eastbound lay-by.

Access: Formal surfaced access track exists throughout the site.

Within short walking distance: Newmilns Nature Site. A longer walk could take in Burnbank Wood, Burnhouse Brae Wood and Cessnock Wood.

Description:

Big Wood was planted on an Ancient Woodland Site. This means that there is map evidence from 1750 of continuity of woodland cover on this site for at least 250 years. The North of the site is an area of semi-mature conifer plantation, while Big Wood has some notable mature trees including oak, lime, sycamore and beech.

Bird Species: Big Wood provides a varied habitat suitable for a range of species;

Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)
